Website Construction

Website Construction is quite possibly the most overlooked step in the website development process . Constructing a website is like building a house. The "skeleton" of the site must be on solid footing with a sturdy frame. For example, if there isn't a front door to your house your guests can't get in. The same holds with your website.

Many website design firms focus entirely too much on fancy graphics and animation. They forget to build a great blueprint. Without it, all of your website design efforts will be for nothing. Remember, the primary goal is for people to "find" your website easily.

Thinking through your website construction will take time and thought, but it will be well worth it in the end.

Search Engine Friendly Website Design is critical. You want potential customers to find your site and the best way to do that is through a great design.

Many companies need a website redesign to make them more searchable. Generally when this happens the website owner decides to go back to more basic website building tools by getting rid of flash and going with less eye popping graphics to a more basic visual design. This is the smartest move any website owner can make.

Whether you're looking to create a new website or you're looking for a website redesign the following website construction tools are critical in making your website search engine friendly.

Step One: The Beginning

Start from the Beginning: A couple of key things need to be in place before anything else can happen with your website.

  • Chose a domain name. There are any number of places you can seek out domain names and register. When choosing your domain name select a name that relates in some way to your theme. Keep it short and remember, if at all possible get a .com. Click here to see our list of reccomended registrar companies!
  • Chose a web hosting company. Again there are any number of low cost hosting services out there.
  • Set up an FTP client server. This is the most common method of moving files between two Internet sites. FTP is a way to login to another Internet site for the purposes of retrieving and/or sending files. This is where your website files live.

Many website design companies will take care of all of these things for you if you don't have the time or the know-how.

Step Two: What is your Website's Theme?

What is the theme of your website? The theme of your website is the overall message. You should be able to write it down in a couple of keywords.

  • Once you've determined your theme, every other sub-theme should branch out from it and be relevant to it.
  • Stick with your themes and sub-themes. Stay on message. Clarity is critical. Confusion is deadly.
  • Write your web content so that it is original and is relevant to your theme and sub-themes.
  • Keep it interesting!

Step Three: Create a Site Map

Creating a site map:

  • Get organized by creating a site map.
  • Your site map can be a visual or text representation of your website blueprint. Site mapping is a way for you to put your blueprint on paper and share it with your website designer and webmaster.
  • This should include the "Privacy Terms," Contact Us, and "About Us" Pages.

It should also include all the content pages of your website and be clearly labeled in folders on your server.

Site Maps can come in many forms. This is a visual representation of what site map can look like. A good site map makes the job of organizing your site for usability much more clear.

Step Four: Organize your Folders and Directories

Organize your Folders: Organizing and properly labeling your website on the server. You website design company should make everything very clear and accessible to you. Keeping the layout of your website organized on the server makes accessing it later on a lot easier.

Now that you have your website construction finished it's time to move on to optimizing your website.
