In
1964 the Lyndon Johnson presidential campaign made
history when it hired a top advertising agency to
produce television and radio commercials. The campaign,
produced by Doyle Dane and Bernbach(DDB), reminded
viewers of Barry Goldwater's views on nuclear war.
DDB
produced the famous "Daisy" ad where a little girl
is seen counting flower pedals. The image then
fades to a terrifying nuclear explosion. For the
first time ever, a political campaign used powerful
television images to help get a candidate elected.
This campaign is considered by many to be the birth
of the modern political advertising campaign. The
media spend topped any budget previously seen in
a political campaign as well. In one twelve day
period LBJ's campaign spent $72,000 on radio and
television campaign ads. Of course, modern day
politicians must raise millions to successfully
make an impact.
In the 2004
Presidential Election candidates raised roughly
$1 billion dollars to spend on advertising alone.
Local television stations benefitted the most from
this amazing in flux of money. However, while television
advertising may still be seen as a "must" for politicians,
the internet (as
a political tool) will play a huge role in the
next presidential election in 2008. Already, candidates
are posting their profiles on
MySpace and MySpace is launching a new political
activism channel.

2008
Presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, John
McCain and Barack Obama are already utlitizing
the internet to build support for their campaigns.
